What are the symptoms of Bipolar disorder. How is it different from major depression? What are the symptoms of
mania? Know Persistent Depressive disorder and how it is different from the other disorders.
Be able to compare and contrast behavioral, cognitive, and sociocultural views that explain depression
Cognitive views: negative thoughts, automatic thoughts, learned helplessness, cognitive triad
What is ECT, what does it entail?
CBT, Psychodynamic Therapy, Interpersonal Psychotherapy-know what these therapies are and be able to tell the
difference between these therapies. I may ask questions like: “A therapist assigns homework for a client and has
them journal their thoughts, and identify the automatic thoughts and patterns of thinking that are unhelpful
and unrealistic. What type of therapy is this?”
Antidepressant medication (don’t need to know specifics, just know what these medications do), how long do they
take to work? What neurotransmitter does Prozac primarily work on?
Lithium and mood stabilizers for treatment of Bipolar Disorder- What do these medications do?

Men or Women: Who is more likely to kill themselves? Who is more likely to attempt suicide? Who is more likely
to use firearms? Who is more likely to use more lethal means to attempt suicide?

What are some of the MAJOR things you want to ask in suicide assessment?
Questions about the nature of suicide: are suicide attempts usually highly panned out methodical acts or are they
typically very impulsive spur-of-the-moment behaviors?
Does making the means (e.g. firearms, knives, pills, etc) slightly less accessible make a person less likely to kill
themselves.
