W4 Discussion Question 1: Personality and Career Inventories

Post: This week, you will be discussing your experience with the personality and career tests you took and the results you received, as well as situating that in the literature on these kinds of tests. Make sure to respond to each part of the prompt. Your responses do not require you to detail your specific results, but you may wish to use them as examples as you answer the questions below.

Before taking this course and completing this assignment, what did you already know or believe about personality theory in general and your personality in particular? Do you think this prior knowledge influenced your learning or your experience in the activity?
What are each of the scales you completed measuring? What theory, if any, is the scale based on?
How did responses across the three scales correlate – how were they similar, and how were they different?
What do you think are the most appropriate uses for each of the scales?
If you had to choose one scale to recommend to a loved one who was seeking to gain self-knowledge, which scale would you recommend and why?
(Optional) What personal insights did you gain from completing this exercise? Does anything you learned make you see yourself, your work, or your personal relationships in a different light?

(Myer-Briggs Type Scale Results)

When combined, that makes your personality type INFP. A detailed description of this personality type is below.

According to Myers-Briggs, INFPs focus much of their energy on an inner world dominated by intense feeling and deeply held ethics. They seek an external life that is in keeping with these values. Loyal to the people and causes important to them, INFPs can quickly spot opportunities to implement their ideals. They are curious to understand those around them, and so are accepting and flexible except when their values are threatened.

INFPs are creative types and often have a gift for language. As introverts, they may prefer to express themselves through writing. Their dominant Feeling drives their desire to communicate, while their auxiliary intuition supplies the imagination. Having a talent for symbolism, they enjoy metaphors and similes. They continually seek new ideas and adapt well to change. They prefer working in an environment that values these gifts and allows them to make a positive difference in the world, according to their personal beliefs.
