Purpose: The study of emotion has generated many theories, some of them in direct conflict with one another. By researching one theory of emotion in depth, you will gain insight into the empirical process and the intellectual debate in this important subfield of psychology. By completing an annotated bibliography, you will practice your literature review and  writing and citation skills. This assignment also presents you with an opportunity to reflect on its completion and how you can integrate what you learned into your life outside this course – a metacognitive activity that will deepen your understanding and enhance your critical thinking skills.

This week, you were presented with (at least) two very different perspectives on emotions: one that says that emotions are predictable patterns of physiological and cognitive reactions (e.g., evidence of facial expression universality across cultures), and another that claims emotions are predictions based on past experience and the context of our experience [e.g., “emotions which seem to happen to you are made by you” (Barrett, 2018)].

Choose one emotion-related theory and wright an annotated bibliography that references empirical studies in support of that theory (see this guide Links to an external site.for a definition, general recommendations, and a few examples of an annotated bibliography). You should find at least three peer-reviewed sources for this assignment. In this week’s Recommended Readings, you’ve been provided with three texts as potential launching points for this assignment. You may use those texts (and their references) to help you find sources – if you do so, make sure to include a citation for the original text. It does not count as one of your three sources.

As an introduction to your annotated bibliography, clearly identify your chosen theory and explain its basic tenets. Outline the general perspective that this theory takes. (250-500 w)

For each entry in your annotated bibliography, make sure to address the following (250-500 w):

What kind of source is this: an empirical article (meaning some kind of study was conducted), a meta-analysis, a review/response, a short report, etc.?
What is the purpose of the paper?
What does this source have to say about/contribute to your chosen theory?
What are potential limitations of this source? What challenges might those who  contradict your theory levy against the findings/conclusions in this source?

As a conclusion, reflect on your experience in this assignment. What was it like to limit yourself to the perspective of one theory and find sources to defend it? How was your experience of reading through sources to find the best ones to use in this assignment? How do you think you could apply what you learned in this assignment to your own emotional life? (200-400 w)
