THE MEANING OF RECOVERY

The interpretation of recovery differs among people.  To me, recovery is where a person is actively choosing behaviors that encourage a well-managed or drug-free lifestyle.  For instance, a person who consumes large amounts of alcohol every time they don’t have to work (such as nights and weekends) would be considered someone with alcohol use disorder.  After treatment services and behavioral therapies, that person may drink a glass of wine with supper rather than binge a whole bottle; this is the well-managed perspective.  That same person may, instead, give up drinking entirely, becoming “sober” and ultimately living “drug-free.” I don’t particularly appreciate coining the phrase “someone in recovery should be drug-free” because, in reality, that isn’t always a possibility.

Lasting recovery is a possibility for those with addiction.  However, it takes a lot of hard work and a strong locus of control.  Behavioral therapies are vital to successfully holding positive in the recovery Journey.  Those using medications during their recovery journey will also benefit from behavioral therapies as they boost their effectiveness (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020). Different types of therapy include Cognitive-behavioral therapy, contingency management, motivational enhancement therapy, family therapy, and twelve-step facility, all of which address the whole person (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2020).  If the person with the addiction allows withdrawal, stays in treatment, and takes the behavioral steps to prevent a relapse, recovery can be long-lasting and life-saving.
