The professional knowledge contained within the discipline is dynamic and must be continually updated. Other nursing professionals are sounding the alarm on this issue as well. Litchfield & Jonsdottir (2008) noted that “a practice discipline of nursing does not yet exist” (p.51). A gap exists in many aspects of nursing.     Many professionals call for the role of nurses to be re-examined. According to Strech & Wyatt (2013), “The Institute of Medicine’s (IOM’s) landmark 2010 report, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health represents a largescale, evidenced-based look at how the nursing profession must evolve to meet the changing needs of health care in the years to come. Nurses should be full partners, with physicians and other health professionals, in redesigning health care in the United States” (p. 29). Nurses should not be considered a mere extension of the physician. According to Chard (2013), “one charge of the IOM committee was to rethink the role of the nurse in the context of a nursing shortage, present and future technology, the needs of society, and the entire health care workforce” (p. 274). We must adapt to meet the challenges of having a shortage of nurses care for the needs of an aging population of baby boomers.     To me, my personal role in propelling the profession forward is being a responsible nursing professional. This means actively becoming a lifelong learner. It is important to disseminate the correct information to patients. Keeping up to date on evidence-based practice and obtaining certifications is necessary for competence in the field. I work in a psychiatric hospital and unfortunately received the same exact on-boarding as other employees including accountants and housekeepers. I would like to see my place of employment offer regular trainings regarding advancements in the field, particularly nursing-based psychiatric practice. Many new medications for mental health are being prescribed lately by physicians at my hospital and I find myself independently looking up information about them prior to administering them to patients.     It is imperative to keep current on nursing practice to better service the needs of our clients. As time goes on, medicine evolves. Schlotfeldt (2013) stated, “knowledge judged to be erroneous, inadequate, and outdated should be deleted. This knowledge will be derived from basic and clinical scientific nursing research, both quantitative and qualitative…” (p.17). During a treatment team, our psychiatric team noted the outdatedness of waxy flexibility in practice as it is rarely seen anymore. We also noted, though, how much of a problem marijuana-related psychosis, particularly in the strains that have been genetically modified to increase the amount of THC, has become. Scholtfeldt accurately asserted that we as a profession must move forward with our research and standards to meet an ever-changing world.Social SciencePsychology
