TOPIC: Proving the Existence of the Traditional Judeo-Christian God

Use the FOLLOWING FOR YOUR THESIS STATEMENT AND PUT IT INTO YOUR INTRODUCTION EXACTLY AS IT APPEARS BELOW. IN THIS PAPER “GOD” REFERS TO THE TRADITIONAL JUDEO-CHRISTIAN GOD. (The format for writing the paper is below. It tells you where your thesis must go.)

1. This paper argues that there is conclusive proof that the traditional God exists.

Here are the 8 items that you must (1) explain completely (in section 2) and then (2) critically discuss in your paper (in section 3). See the format for the paper below.

1. St. Aquinas (Choose ONE of Aquinas’ first 4 arguments. Do NOT do more than one.)

2. Aquinas’ 5th argument

3. St. Anselm’s Ontological Argument

4. The Argument from Religious Experience (DO NOT REFER TO WILLIAM JAMES WHEN YOU EXPLAIN THIS ARGUMENT. YOU WILL LOSE POINTS FOR DOING THAT. EXPLAIN THE ARGUMENT, NOT JAMES’ VIEWS. WHEN YOU CRITICALLY DISCUSS THIS ARGUMENT LATER IN SECTION 3, YOU CAN BRING IN JAMES’ VIEWS ON RELIGIOUS EXPERIENCE IF YOU WANT, BUT IT IS NOT NECESSARY.)

5.  Using the Internet or other source, FIND ONE SINGLE ARGUMENT NOT COVERED IN OUR CLASS OR TEXTBOOK THAT ATTEMPTS TO DO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING: (1) PROVE THAT GOD EXISTS OR (2) PROVE THAT GOD DOES NOT EXIST. IT MUST ATTEMPT TO PROVE EXACTLY ONE OF THESE THINGS AND NOTHING ELSE. YOU MUST MAKE SURE THAT THIS PROOF IS NOT THE SAME AS ANY PROOF COVERED IN OUR CLASS. YOU ARE EXPECTED TO STATE THE NAME OF THE ARGUMENT AND EXPLAIN IT CLEARLY, INCLUDING STATING ITS CONCLUSION CLEARLY ABOUT WHETHER GOD EXISTS OR NOT. EXPLAIN THE WHOLE ARGUMENT COMPLETELY. Here is an example of a site that covers some proofs for God’s existence, and you can use ONE of the proofs from this site, but it is not necessary to use a proof.

6.The Problem of Evil (Explain this argument that attempts to prove that God does not exist.)

7. Hick’s TWO ARGUMENTS THAT ARE TWO SOLUTIONS to the problem of evil. (USE THE CORRECT TWO NAMES THAT HE GIVES HIS TWO ARGUMENTS. Explain each of these arguments and how they answer the problem of evil.)

8. Kierkegaard (YOU MUST include an explanation of some of the arguments he gives for his view.)

1. Introduction and Thesis (type the headings into your paper)

In this section, give a short introduction ) to the topic. You must give your thesis statement here. This is the main conclusion that you are arguing for in your paper. Briefly summarize your reasons for believing your thesis and mention some of the arguments you’ll be covering in the paper.

2. Explanation of Philosophical Views

In this section, explain all 8 views assigned for the paper — see the 8 items above. DO NOT put your views or criticisms in this section. Only explain in your own sentences exactly what the thinkers have said. Be complete. Don’t leave anything out or you can lose points. Use paragraphs — There must be at least 8 separate paragraphs in this section — at least one paragraph per item. You can put an additional short heading for each of the 8 items to make things clearer and easier to read. Make sure that you state the argument’s conclusion — for instance,
state whether the argument concludes that God exists or that God does not exist.

3. My Arguments

In this section, CRITICALLY DISCUSS ALL 8 ITEMS. START EACH PARAGRAPH WITH A TOPIC SENTENCE THAT STATES CLEARLY WHETHER YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE WITH THE VIEW OR PROOF YOU ARE GOING TO DISCUSS. THEN EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE OR DISAGREE. Give your views in this section.

4. Conclusion

Give a short conclusion where you summarize the main points for your thesis. _________________________________________________________________________________
