One reason for the increase in opioid addiction is the overprescribing of these drugs in the 1990s by pharmaceutical companies, which reassured the medical community that patients would not become addicted to prescription opioid pain relievers, leading to a significant increase in prescribing. This, combined with the fact that these drugs are often easily obtained through prescription, has led to widespread misuse and addiction. The recreational use and resale of opioids are significant issues in the opioid addiction crisis because of how they affect our bodies. Addiction to opioids is a severe issue that is affecting a lot of communities across the United States. It is estimated that more than two million individuals in the United States are now dealing with a drug addiction problem that is connected to the use of opioids, and that more than 130 people pass away each day because of an overdose using opioids. Opioids are a family of pharmaceuticals that include both legally prescribed painkillers like oxycodone, hydrocodone, codeine, and morphine, as well as illegally obtained substances like heroin. These medications are widely used to alleviate pain, even though they are extremely addictive and often result in misuse and dependency. The opioid epidemic is having a catastrophic impact on communities, with many people trying to deal with the financial and emotional ramifications of addiction. The problem is also having a disastrous effect on individuals. There is a correlation between opioid addiction and greater rates of unemployment, criminality, and homelessness, in addition to an increase in the spread of infectious illnesses like HIV and hepatitis C. It has also had a huge influence on the system of healthcare, with the expected medical expenses due to opioid addiction in 2018 being over $78.5 billion.  Behavioral or process addictions are characterized by an excessive engagement in a non-substance-related behavior.
