Choose a real-world setting/population in which you would be most interested in applying the principles of ABA. Discuss with your classmates how the principles of ABA could apply in your and their situations, including how the use of scientific principles and methods can be incorporated to analyze and change behavior. 

 

To use ABA therapy to its potential, you must dispel the myths about it and realize how effective it can be in many settings and for many types of children. ABA is a treatment that has been shown to work by science. It has hundreds of methods and can be used for more than just autism spectrum disorder. ABA education helps kids with attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder, brain injuries, obsessive-compulsive disorder, speech and language problems, and autism spectrum disorder. ABA in the classroom can treat any behavior disorder or disease. ABA is beneficial beyond special education. The father of behaviorism said it best: According to strict behaviorists, all behaviors are learned. Anyone’s behavior can be changed with the right conditioning. Between the 1920s and the mid-1950s, behaviorism dominated psychology. The desire to make psychology an objective science contributed to the rise of behavioral psychology. Researchers wanted to create theories that could be clearly described and empirically measured and used to improve daily life (VCU Autism Center For Education et al., 2023).

 

ABA can improve, manage, or reduce behaviors for everyone. General education teachers deal with students with trouble transitioning, tantrums, inattentiveness, aggression, etc. ABA can help mainstream students who fidget and disrupt the class. Behavior analysis is what teachers do when they learn how to figure out why and what the point of behavior is, how to give reinforcement and consequences, and how to change the classroom environment to encourage good behavior. ABA-inspired classrooms need consistency (VCU Autism Center For Education et al., 2023).

 

You and your students must have a behavior plan ready. If the program isn’t working, you should be open to trying something else.ABA principles and methods can help people in several ways. ABA can be used to improve behaviors like listening to a speaker and greeting a peer. The principles and techniques can teach students new skills, such as using a spoon and adding (VCU Autism Center For Education et al., 2023).

 

Identifying a behavior’s function can aid providers in recognizing the contingencies that are currently sustaining the behavior. By identifying the contingencies that maintain the behavior, the provider (or parent) can then make changes to discriminative stimuli (SDs) and related consequences, as well as establish processes and antecedents, to ultimately impact the recognized behavior (Hanley, Iwata, & McCord, 2003).

 

ABA’s applied behavior analysis principles focus on four functions of behavior: escape or avoidance, attention seeking, access to tangibles or reinforcements, and instant gratification (or “because it feels good”). The four behavior analysis principles are as follows:

There is consistency in behavioral science across applications. Accordingly, there are more similarities than differences among the various subfields of ABA. By changing environmental variables that influence socially important behaviors, we all hope to improve performance. The science is consistent across applications, but the tools and techniques used to change behavior vary, as do the specific career-related skills and competencies needed (Tatom, 2021).

The skills required to implement an intervention with an autistic child differ from those required to analyze and improve workplace safety. However, both require a thorough understanding of the science of behavior. Within the same field, different jobs require different knowledge and skills. It is well known among behavior analysts in academia that teaching content courses requires knowledge and skills in both the content (e.g., behavior analysis and developmental disabilities) and the teaching (behavioral analytic instructional design). Different tools, techniques, and skills are required when ABA practitioners transition from client-facing roles (e.g., behavior technicians) to staff-facing roles (e.g., supervisors and directors). These skills are part of organizational behavior management (OBM) (Britannica, T. Editors of Encyclopaedia, 2020).
