Section One: Risk Assessment Section One Instruction
In this section, you will demonstrate your skills in risk assessment by creating three videos. Below, you will find three short vignettes from a client session. Review the summary of the case first. Then review each video containing the client’s statements. Finally, record three separate video responses to the client using the required skills. Please review the rubric for more details about what to include. To review video instructions for this assignment, click here. Case Summary
Melody is a 39-year-old White woman you’ve been working with for 6 months. She originally presented to address unresolved childhood trauma, including sexual abuse by her uncle. Five weeks ago, she canceled her session at the last minute citing a family emergency. This session is the first time you have seen her since.
Section One Risk Assessment: Instructions for Video Submissions

For the first video submission, record a brief response you would say to the client that summarizes her experience. Be sure to include at least one reflection of feeling. Next, view the client’s statements from the same session by clicking here. For the second video submission, record a response you would say to the client that assesses the frequency, duration, and severity of the risky behavior. Allow for pauses between each of your assessment responses as if the client were speaking to you in between them. Please keep your entire response, including all three inquiries, under one minute. Section Two: Safety Planning for Interpersonal Violence Section Two Instructions
Once you have completed section one, read the information below, and follow the prompts. In your next session with Melody, she presents with a bruise on her left cheek and reports that things at home have gotten worse. As you begin, she tells you the following story.
You know, Jeanine and I have been together for five years – married for the past three. I love her, but I just… I haven’t mentioned to you that sometimes things get really rough between us when we fight. Yes, she’s not been feeling well, and she’s overwhelmed, so I get it. But in the last month or so, things have gotten pretty bad.It’s normal for her to raise her voice occasionally and she’s shoved me around a bit in the past. But she slapped me last week, as you can see (she motions to her face). And a few weeks ago, she shook me so hard, I woke up with a migraine headache.I mean, she apologizes every time and I’m never going to leave her. And I totally get it, because sometimes when I try to help… I just seem to make things worse.It’s not like she’s bigger than me either! That’s the embarrassing part – she’s three inches shorter than I am, so I don’t think she’s going to do any serious damage… but wow, she’s strong.
