Thomas Case Vignette

Thomas is a 70-year-old Colorado native. He was married to Jody for 47 years. Thomas and Jody met during a dance at their high school and married a year later after graduation.  Thomas worked in the oil fields and attended college where he graduated as an engineer; he was the “breadwinner”, and Jody was the “typical housewife”.

The couple has one daughter named Liz and a son named Ronny. Thomas, Liz, and Ronny were always very close while growing up. On the other hand, Jody and her two children, specially Liz, were often embroiled in conflict. Thomas enjoyed playing with the children and reviewing their homework. He was also the peace maker when the children had arguments, and the one to comfort Liz when she would be in her room crying after a conflict with her mother.

Thomas and Jody visited both their kids while in college. After Ronny moved to Australia, they visited him and his partner and traveled the country. Ronny remained in contact with his family via telephone specially during birthdays and holidays.

After several years of marriage, Liz moved to a town near her parents. Thomas often visited Liz’s home on Saturday afternoons while Jody went to the store or out with her friends. He would play with the grandchildren and find chores or repairs to be done around the house. The children enjoyed these times with the grandfather and Liz also value his company and help. On the other hand, Sebastian (Liz husband) will politely find excuses to leave the house or retrieve himself in the bedroom.

When Jody passed away after a stroke, Thomas struggled, he lost 25 pounds in the first 6 months following Jody’s funeral. He looked thin and weak, and the home became very dirty and messy. Thomas seemed lost. During that time, he was hospitalized with pneumonia and began to show some confusion. When Thomas was release from the hospital, his physician recommended Thomas to be monitored. Ronny came to stay with his father but had to return to his work in Australia after a couple of weeks.

Liz, worried about her father, and moved him in with her and her family.  After talking with Ronny and Thomas, she proceeded to sell the family home. Liz works full time as a nurse, and Sebastian is a manager at a local retail store. They have three children (Matt, 19, Lynn, 17, and Paul, 15).

After living together for 3 months, Thomas continued to lose weight. He became more disoriented, forgetful and weak. Liz became stressed and exhausted from caring for everyone, so she complains and vents to Ronny who began to call less often feeling guilty of his inability to offer help. Sebastian became angry and resentful that he saw less of his wife. He complained that Thomas was manipulative always with excuses to demand Liz time and attention specially at night. Sebastian and Liz began to have conflicts about this issue, as well as her work hours. As the conflict between Liz and Sebastian increased, Paul began to experience panic attacks and Matt began staying away in college not coming as often as before to the home. Lynn was becoming increasingly irritable and short-tempered specially when her father complains to her about her mother Liz.  Lynn was also worry about Paul and angry at Matt for not coming home.

The family comes to you for help. On the first visit, they are sat as follows:

                     Sebastian                    Lynn
