How do you see the Christian foundation of colonization in the U.S. shaping society today?

The Christian foundation of colonization made it possible for differences in beliefs for generations to come. At first it was between the Pueblo Indians and the Catholic church in New Mexico. The Pueblo Indians were polytheistic, whereas the Christians, Monotheistic. This means the Pueblo’s believed in different Gods, and the Christians believed in one. After they clashed, it caused a series of events for other colonizers to try and colonize the new land and fill it with religion. I feel like if they never attempted to do this action, then the U.S wouldn’t be the country it is today. It is the most religiously diverse country in the world, without the Christian foundation, it wouldn’t have been possible to spread any sort of religion.

Where do you see the concept of secularism at play in American society?

In modern times I see secularism in many different scenarios. One of them being in the workspace. A lot of people don’t get involved in work and religion and usually keep it to themselves. I’ve heard of issues that occurred when religion was involved, just like when politics are spoken of. When people who have different political beliefs speak about politics, they could get into an argument or fight in different manners, and I’ve heard the same for religion. Secularism is another way for people who have different faiths to be protected.

Choose and define the one of these three theoretical perspectives on religion that you find most useful in thinking about Christianity in America: functionalism, conflict theory or symbolic interactionism.

The theoretical perspective I’m choosing is Functionalism. It basically means how society would be kept secure and stable. With functionalism, it would focus on what necessary steps or process is required to ensure that a society will continue to grow.

Explain why you think the theoretical perspective you chose is the most useful in analyzing religion. Implement a direct quote using ASA style into your explanation.

I believe that that the Christians during the colonial days wanted to spread the religion while also building a new society away from the kings in the old world. They wanted something new, and with their hopes of spreading Christianity, that would be the key to ensuring the society will be stable. If all the people were to convert, then there wouldn’t be any issues within the communities since everyone will have similar beliefs and follow the same religious cultures. The Christians in those times saw the goal of bringing the new world to an ecclesia state, where one religion is the only one for the people.
