ETHICS IN THE FIELD OF ADDICTION

How might the experience of listening to service users express pain impact a professional over time? Addiction professionals may struggle at times with repeated exposure to trauma and must prioritize self-care so that they can remain effective in their roles. Addiction professionals may sometimes be tempted to overextend themselves because they care about their service users, but blurred boundaries and burnout do not ultimately serve service users. The NAADAC Association for Addiction Professionals Code of Ethics provides guiding principles that outline the importance of confidentiality, clear roles, and professional responsibilities. When addiction professionals face any uncertainty about how to ethically approach a situation with a service user, they should review the NAADAC Code of Ethics. Ethical dilemmas are challenging even for experienced professionals, so it is also wise to consult with other colleagues and supervisors.

In this Discussion, you will select an ethical dilemma that an addiction professional might experience and describe how you would respond if you were the addiction professional. You will also explain how the NAADAC Code of Ethics applies to your scenario.

One day she asks for your phone number in case of emergency if she cannot reach her sponsor. My organisation  encourages to have a good working relationship with our clients so i decide nothing is wrong with it.

The client starts to call me late at night asking me to meet her to help her through her cravings. How would you handle this situation?

Post in the subject line which ethical dilemma you selected, and then describe what you might do in that situation if you were the addiction professional. Identify at least one ethical code that you think applies to the situation. Why did you choose that code, and why do you think it applies to the situation?
