General Instructions: Below are a variety of discussion topics related to chapters 9 and 10. For this DB, you should choose one of these topics and post an original thread thoroughly addressing all aspects of that item in at least 2-3 well-written paragraphs. When creating your thread, use an informative subject line (e.g., Kids Love Plah-Doh). Your original post is worth a maximum of 8 points. You must post your own original thread before you can see what others have posted.

You also need to give thoughtful responses to at least 2 classmates’ original posts. How can you continue the conversation? What questions do you have for your classmate? Each response is worth 1 point for a maximum of 2 points.

All original posts and responses should be based on evidence from the book or video lectures, and your critical thinking skills. If sources outside the textbook are used, you must include the reference. Use this assignment to show me what you are learning!

As with all DB’s, you will lose one point if you begin participating in a discussion board on the last day it is open. This DB is worth a maximum of 10 points.

Chapter 9 -Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development: A major force in the domain of socioemotional development is Erik Erikson’s Stages of Psychosocial Development. Read over and review all of the 8 stages(e.g., trust vs. mistrust, autonomy vs. shame & doubt, etc). Consider the stage theory as it applies to you AND to someone you know very well who is NOT the same age as you. Completely answer the following questions. Be sure to include specific examples to support your reflections in this discussion board.

Based on your age, which of the 8 stages are you in? Identify and describe this stage and the crisis associated with the stage (e.g., trust vs. mistrust).  Do you think this is an accurate reflection of where you are in life? Is there a stage that would fit you better? Provide an explanation and examples to support your statements.
Think of someone you know well who is NOT in the same stage as you, based on their age. How old are they and which of the 8 stages are they in? Identify and describe this stage and the crisis associated with the stage (e.g., trust vs. mistrust). Do you think this is an accurate reflection of where they are in life? Is there a stage that would fit them better? Provide an explanation and examples to support your statements.

Chapter 9 – Moral dilemma: Read the following moral dilemma and then create a post addressing the questions below. The Heinz Dilemma: A woman was near death from a special kind of cancer. There was one drug that the doctors thought might save her. It was a form of radium that a druggist in the same town had recently discovered. The drug was expensive to make, but the druggist was charging ten times what the drug cost him to produce. He paid $200 for the radium and charged $2,000 for a small dose of the drug. The sick woman’s husband, Heinz, went to everyone he knew to borrow the money, but he could only get together about $1,000 which is half of what it cost. He told the druggist that his wife was dying and asked him to sell it cheaper or let him pay later. But the druggist said: “No, I discovered the drug and I’m going to make money from it.” So Heinz got desperate and broke into the man’s store to steal the drug for his wife.

describe each level of Kohlberg’s theory of moral development (preconventional, conventional, and post conventional).
Should Heinz have broken into the laboratory to steal the drug for his wife? Why or why not? (Really explain your reasoning in few sentences.)
Which level of Kohlberg’s moral reasoning are you using in your opinion/answer about Heinz Dilemma.

Chapter 10 – Acculturation: The Santos family recently emigrated from the Philippines to a large city in the United States. Mr. and Mrs. Santos refuse to speak English, shop only in Filipino markets, and restrict their children from playing with American children because they see American values as a poor influence. Their teenage daughter, Mila, is dating an American boy, she has immersed herself in the American culture, and refuses to speak Tagalog (Filipino language) because she wants desperately to fit into her new school and social environment.

Based on what you read in your eBook on acculturation strategies answer the following:

Write an argument for why Mila’s parents are justified in their acculturative approach. Make sure to identify and describe their acculturation strategy.
Write an argument for why Mila is justified in her acculturative approach. Make sure to identify and describe her acculturation strategy.
Discuss the pros and cons of each approach to acculturation and how might it affect each of the family members psychologically.
There are a total of four acculturative processes. Which of the four processes is likely to generate the least amount of stress in the lives of the Santos’, and why?

Chapter 10 – Cultural stereotypes: Watch the famous TED talk,  The Danger of a Single Story , by Novelist Chimamanda Adiche. First, discuss your reaction to this talk. Next, discuss what you think about Chimamanda’s statement that the problem with stereotypes is not that they are incorrect but that they are incomplete. Do you agree or disagree with her ideas of stereotypes? Why or why not? In your post, you must name and describe at least 2-3 concepts from Chapter 10 (besides cultural stereotypes) and be sure to discuss how they relate to this TED Talk. https://www.ted.com/talks/chimamanda_adichie_the_danger_of_a_single_story?language=en
