Home Safety Report Assignment

 

Use the following Home Safety Baby Proofing checklist to make a one page report on the safety and how child proof your home is. Use it to assess your own home. How safe is your home for a toddler? Be specific which areas of your home were suitable for a toddler and where (and what) improvements need to be made.

Here is the home safety checklist:

 

General/Around the Home:
– Remember to keep doors locked
– Anchor wobbly furniture
– Use a vacuum to help find small dangerous objects
– Keep pools and tubs covered when not in use
– Wash hands before touching baby
– So not let people crowd baby
– Do not let ill people around baby

 

The Living room:
– Consider carpeting to cushion fall blows
– Safeguard sharp coffee table corners and edges
– Check furniture sturdiness
– Make sure there’s nothing dangerous baby can climb
– Check window cords do not dangle too low
– Close off the fireplace
– Remove dangling cords around tv/stereo
– Install electrical outlet and door knob covers
– Install window locks

 

The Stairs:
– Get a baby gate
– Make sure you have a handrail
– When a baby is a toddler, teach them how to safely walk the stairs
– Consider some carpeting or non-slip mats
– Keep stairways well lit

 

The Bathroom:
– Keep toilet lid down or invest in a toilet lid lock
– Remove toilet bowl cleaner
– Keep razors out of reach in the shower
– Lock medicine and supplements away
– Reduce water heater temp to less than 120 degrees
– Get a non-slip bath mat
– Check the screw covers on the base of the toilet
– Keep soaps and toothpaste out of reach
– Never leave baby alone in tub
– Do not overfill the tub; only 2-4 inches

 

The Nursery/Bedroom
– Invest in a baby monitor
– Be wary of second hand cribs
– Put up a window guard
– Look for a crib with fixed sides and firm mattress that fits tightly in crib
– No pillows, blankets, etc., in cribs
– Install electrical outlet and door knob covers
– Use a curved changing table mattress
– Keep walls around the crib decoration free
– Consider a glider over a rocking chair
– Take mobiles down as baby becomes more mobile
– Safety straps on changing table and high chairs

 

The Kitchen
– Install door, cabinet and appliance locks
– Consider natural alternatives to chemical cleaning products
– Store plastic bags and foil out of reach
– Lock pill bottles such as multivitamins and supplements away
– Keep breakable dishes and cutlery high up
– Watch for any dangling cords
– Cover exposed electrical outlets
– Keep small magnets of your fridge
– Get safe plastic items your baby can use
