Close of Mock Counseling Session

The final segment of the mock counseling with Norma Kaderka, my mock client, took place on the morning of Wednesday evening, April 26, 2023. My client was packing for one of her out of state trips she and her husband take to visit their grandchildren in California.  She was upbeat, very happy and excited about seeing her grandchildren, however, the mood intensified as we began to talk about her husband’s pending projected retirement.

Norma and her husband, David, have been married for 48 years in what Norma describes as a very happy and full relationship, both very devoted to one another and their family.  Norma is what would be termed as the rock of the family, very intelligent, independent, strong in character and emotional ethics as well as her husband, David.  Norma is a retired teacher and David is a Certified Professional Engineer (CPE) and Partner in a mid-size electrical consulting firm in Houston, Texas for the past 44 years.

Norma is very anxious about David’s pending retirement as she feels her privacy need for independence will be interrupted by the constant presence of her husband.  After meeting several times to touch on the aspects of her fears regarding her husband’s retirement, she willingly shared her predictions of her anticipations.  During our session, Norma appeared to be tense, restricted in her conversation, expected to be due to the presence of her husband, somewhere in the house.  Norma’s voice was tense, and she spoke in a rather angered sense when speaking about her husband’s permanent presence in the home after retirement.  David is very affectionate with Norma and as Norma explains with much anxiety, would be with her 24/7 if possible. Norma appears to be a tense, reserved, yet intense individual who has difficulty sharing personal aspects of her life or thoughts. The multisensory intervention used during her closing statement was to be present and listen and ask leading questions to stimulate response.
