In conducting interviews with family members, I gathered the following information:
Father: Born in Hungary in 1937, moved to the United States after the war. He worked as a butcher and passed away in 2017 due to heart disease. He did not have any known substance use disorders or mental health issues.
Mother: Born in Hungary in 1947, moved to the United States after the war. She worked as a wig maker. She struggled with substance abuse with prescription drugs.
Their oldest daughter Suri was born in the United States in 1964. She is a teacher and has struggled with anxiety throughout her life.
Middle daughter Penina was born in the United States in 1967. She is a real estate agent with no history of substance abuse but has struggled with mental health issues.
The third daughter Rebecca was born in the United States in 1977. She is a special ed teacher, and after her dad died, she struggled with anxiety and depression. She has never had any issues with substance abuse.
Their son Simcha was born in the United States in 1982. He is a speech therapist and has had a history of alcohol abuse.
Based on the interviews and personal experiences, I have identified the following substance use disorders and emotional/behavioral issues in my family:
Oldest sister: Anxiety
Middle Sister Mental Health
Mom’s Substance abuse ( prescription drugs).
Youngest sister: Depression and anxiety.
Brother Alcohol Abuse

Each person’s issues affect their personal and family life in various ways. For example:

Oldest sister: Her anxiety has caused her to isolate herself from family members at times, and she has strained her relationships with her children and siblings.
Brother, His substance abuse has led to legal issues, strained relationships with family members, and financial problems.
Middle sister: Her Mental health has caused her to experience health issues and legal problems and has strained her relationships with her husband and children.
