Case Study

Prior to the accident of 21 March 2021 Ms Menzi completed a Bachelor’s Degree in
Engineering through the University of Johannesburg in 2015, following which she
obtained her Master’s Degree in Chemical Engineering from Stellenbosch University
in 2017. She was 30 years old when the accident happened.

At the time of the accident, since 2018, Ms Menzi was completing her PhD in Chemical
Engineering through the University of the Free State. Her PhD studies involved
laboratory experiments, requiring a significant amount of fine motor precision, amongst
others. The medical experts on record have since declared her partially quadriplegic.
She experienced mild head injuries. However, the experts also report that her
neurocognitive profile is indicative of essentially intact cognitive functioning.
Ms Menzi was assessed/examined by the medical experts that included the
Neurosurgeon, Orthopaedic Surgeon, Occupational Therapist, Clinical
Neuropsychologist, and Psychiatrist. She reported that as a PhD student, she was
earning R2 000,00 per month as a Laboratory Assistant, for helping setup and
supervise undergraduate students with their experiments during the 2019 and 2020
academic years. Ms Menzi also reported that it would have taken her a total of
approximately three years to complete her qualification (i.e., 2018 until end 2020). She
has not returned to complete her studies due to the limitations imposed by the
accident-related sequelae and her dream of completing her PhD seems to have been
thwarted.
