Birth cohorts: Generational influence

Generations X, Y, and Z activity (can talk about in discussion post)

This is an exercise to help students explore cohort differences in the process of identity formation. Complete the following exercise and you can use what you come up with to share in this week’s discussion post or just for your own reflection of different generational influences on us. The actual years used for each cohort is controversial and depends on your source, so make sure to note which resource you are using.

Before looking anything up, think about the generation you belong to. Write a short biographical statement about what you think of regarding your own cohort.  Consider what your cohort is known for, what some stereotypes are, and the pressures and challenges facing you when you came of age / or as you are coming of age.

Now, using online resources, describe the cohort into which members of Generation X, Generation Y, and Generation Z were born by answering the following questions.

1. What birth years span each generation?

Generation X:
Generation Y:
Generation Z:

2. What important historical events occurred during the formative years of each generation?

3. In response to the question, “What is the biggest difference between Gen X and Gen Y?” one Web site offered this tongue-in-cheek response: “Most of Gen Y actually thinks being clean and looking clean is a good idea.” What are several other popular stereotypes of the members of Gen X, Y, and Z?

Generation X stereotypes:
Generation Y stereotypes:
Generation Z stereotypes:

4. Each generation seems to develop its own spokespersons and icons, often from the media (singers, actors and actresses, sports figures, etc.) and politics. Who are some of the icons for these three generations?

Generation X icons:
Generation Y icons:
Generation Z icons:

5. Marketing companies develop advertising campaigns for products and events that target specific age groups. For instance, it has been suggested that Generation X advertising is edgy and focuses on the extreme pop culture of the 1990s.

What are some specific examples of this type of Generation X marketing?
What kinds of advertising campaigns target the members of Generation Y?
Generation Z?

What are some of the general themes in these campaigns?
How do they differ from advertising that targets the other cohorts?

6. If you were in charge of creating an advertising campaign for a new line of casual clothes, how would you approach it for a magazine ad or television commercial that targets each generation?
