The Social Learning Theory states moral behavior is learned in the same way that other social behaviors are learned through observing others, positive or negative reinforcement and punishments (Zastrow et al. 2019). Basically, we learn how to act by observing those around us whether it be family or friends. In the United States, 30-35% of students report bullying or being bullied, and 20-35% report being a victim of cyber (online) bullying (Brown, C. F., Demaray, M. K., Tennant, J. E., & Jenkins, L. N. (2017). In my experience, bullying starts at home whether it be bullying in the traditional sense or cyber bullying. At times, parents don’t realize how their words and actions affect their children, and how much they pay attention to, and look up to their parents. If they see them being the bully then they might think it is okay to do the same. On that same note, if the child is being bullied at home by a parent or a sibling it can cause them to be bullies or become the victim. Children also have what is called a “herd drive” where they long to be accepted by their peers and their peers are more of a factor in their actions and behaviors then the parents (Zastrow et al. 2019). In this case, bullying can come into play by trying to “fit in” to a social crowd for the acceptance. Bullying has changed a lot over the years due to the internet and an increase in social media sites. “31% of cyberbullying victims knew their bully, while 84% of bullies knew their victim” (Patchin, J W. Hinduja, S. (2006). Traditional bullying was more “in your face”. Most of the time you knew who your bully was, they did it right out in the open, but now they can hide behind texting apps, and fake social media profiles.  POST 2One moral development theory that focuses on individual’s accountability is Kohlberg’s theory. In this theory there is a level called post conventional level. At the post conventional level, the person achieves more of an independent moral conscience that allows the individual to decide what is right or wrong and develops his or her own principles to guide decisions.(Zastrow, C. H., Kirst-Ashman, K. K., & Hessenauer, S. L. (2019). Kohlberg theory states that a person determines his or her own moral values as they relate to existing laws and principles. A connection to bullying exists in my opinion to Kohlberg theory is because bullying has to do with choosing to attack, make fun of, control, etc. of another individual. The bullying can take place verbally, physically, and emotionally.  As we live in a time where technology advances, adolescents as more exposure to the various types of bullying through texting messaging, and social media. Cyber victimization is a contemporary problem facing youth and adolescents (Diamanduros, Downs, & Jenkins, 2008; Kowalski & Limber, 2007). The face-to-face encounter of harassment, physical violence or threats of violence still exist. However, with the use of social media, bullying is more intensified because people tend to not be filtered with social media encounters with the victim. Bullying has also intensified with the making of videos and recording of videos where the adolescents are being attacked. Social SciencePsychology
