Scenario   You support John, a client in his home twice a week….

Scenario  

You support John, a client in his home twice a week. You have been away on holidays for the last two week. While you have been away Clair has taken your place in supporting John. You have worked alongside Claire previously and she is very efficient and structured in how she approaches her work. Claire likes to make sure that everything is done correctly the first time and on time, she does not like to ‘dilly dally’ as she calls it. You realised, while working with her over time that this just means she doesn’t like to wait around for things to happen or be done. You know that sometimes this approach can come across abrupt and uncaring. However Claire takes her work very seriously and wants to do a good job. She feels by making sure everything runs to schedule and is done correctly and makes sure every ‘I’ is dotted and is crossed she is doing her job in the best way. John is 58 years old. He has an acquired brain injury from a car accident ten years ago. His speech is slow and laboured, but he enjoys talking and making conversation whenever you are together. John can move around by himself, l although requires a walking stick for balance.

Your work with John generally involves supporting him to doctors’ appointments, helping to pay bills and do his groceries. Today you arrive for your time with John and are looking forward to supporting him after your break. However when John opens the door he is agitated and averts his gaze. He is not as talkative as usual, and you recognise that something is not right.

After a period of time, he shares with you that the service worker who replaced you while you were away was ‘mean’. They did not take the time to listen to John and spoke over the top of him. He said the service worker (who you have worked with for a number of years) made him feel stupid like he was a little child.
