Society and culture contribute to people’s gender identities around the world. As soon as we enter this world, we are given a gender. As we grow, we learn gender identity, which means that, as humans, we can recognize and understand whether we are either male or female (Brannon, 2021).  Developmentally, at 24 months, a child can start to see gender differences (Brannon, 2021). However, a child could have gender-conforming and nonconforming behaviors, like in the example of athlete Bruce Jenner. He was born male, married a woman, and had kids but identified as a woman (Brannon, 2021). In some cases, a person could have gender dysphoria, which means they have several behavioral actions of another gender (Brannon, 2021).

A person’s family, cultural background, and friends can also significantly influence a person’s gender identity, positively or negatively. Family and friends can embrace the person’s gender identity, or they cannot. The media can also be an influencer on gender. For example, in the United States, gender roles are advertised to pass on cultural norms to society (Durriya & Khairullah, 2015). Regarding the workplace, someone’s gender should not play a factor in whether they can perform their job well since that could be considered discrimination. As humans, we all need support.  When it comes to gender identity, it is crucial for people to feel safe and heard. Several LGBQ communities create safe groups to advocate for others’ rights in health and law, such as the Transgender Law Center Help Desk and Trans Health Project (Dawson, 2022).  Also, it is vital for people to educate themselves so they can be there to help those who are alone.
