THE MEANING OF RECOVERY

What comes to mind when you hear the word recovery? How does recovery from addiction compare to recovery from a heart attack or diabetes? Some people believe that a person is “in recovery” once they stop using a substance or engaging in a behavioral addiction. Others define recovery using a broader definition that encompasses a change in behavior, outlook, and identity. Recovery can also be understood as an organizing framework for defining addiction as a chronic disease that can be successfully managed with the right treatments.

In this Discussion, you will explore the definition of recovery in the context of addiction treatment. You will also synthesize this week’s Learning Resources to explain whether lasting recovery from addiction is possible.
